A Girl at a Gun Show

I went to my first gun show this past weekend.  I love shows of any kind…boats, campers, etc.  As long as they offer hot dogs, I am in!  This one did.   :D

This wasn’t a large gun show.  As a matter of fact, there seemed to be just as much other stuff offered as there were guns…maybe more.  My husband was looking to find a buyer for his handgun and find a dealer to buy a new one.  It was pretty disappointing…there were mostly rifles and shotguns there.  Great for those looking for those, though!  It just wasn’t what we were looking for.

I expected something major!  I even envisioned a carnivalistic type of knife throwing show to watch lol.  You know…they ask for a volunteer and then throw knives one after the other until they outline you?  Ok, not really…but it was pretty fun to think about on the drive there lol.  I just thought it would be an everywhere-I-looked-were-guns type of thing.  We weren’t in a county with a large city, no state capital, etc.

I was hoping for more survival information, too.  There was one booth set up with army supply things but nothing I could use.  It was pretty much a let down…except for that hot dog.

So what’s a REAL gun show like?  And do the REAL gun shows have prepping and survival booths?

Sweet Naan Bread

Here’s another recipe that is doable without modern conveniences…if you stock up on the ingredients.  I imagine it would be a bit of a treat since sweet things will be pretty nonexistent if something major ever happened.

Sweet Naan Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour .
  • 1/4 tsp salt .
  • 2/3 cups water .
  • 1/4 cup sugar .
  • 1 Tbs vegetable oil .

Cooking Directions

  1. In a large bowl, stir together flour, salt, and water until a soft dough is formed. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Divide dough into golf ball size pieces and cover with a damp cloth. Let rest for one hour.
  2. Select a ball of dough and roll until very thin but not torn. Sprinkle lightly and evenly with sugar. Fold up dough into a small square and roll out again until very thin.
  3. Heat lightly oiled griddle pan over a medium heat. Place the rolled dough onto the pan and cook for thirty seconds to one minute on each side until golden brown.

There is an option for a print friendly view of this recipe directly under this post if you’d like to print it out.

IRAN WARNS WORLD OF COMING GREAT EVENT

It seems very few take Iran’s leader,  Ahmadinejad, or the Ayatollah Khamenei seriously.  The things they say make people roll their eyes or giggle at their obvious madness.  But these people are motivated.  They’ve been warning us for years.  They want war with Israel and the US…and they’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen.

There is a new article out this morning with some very serious implications.

“In light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated,” Ayatollah Khamenei, the Iranian supreme leader, is warning.

Khamenei then claimed the current century as the century of Islam and promised that human history is on the verge of a great event and that soon the world will realize the power of Allah.

Many clerics in Iran have stated that Khamenei is the deputy of the last Islamic messiah on earth and that obedience to him is necessary for the final glorification of Islam.

Khamenei has been heard to say that the coming of the last Islamic Messiah, the Shiites’ 12th Imam Mahdi, is near and that specific actions need to be taken to protect the Islamic regime for upcoming events.

Mahdi, according to Shiite belief, will reappear at the time of Armageddon. Selected forces within the Revolutionary Guards and Basij reportedly have been trained under a task force called “Soldiers of Imam Mahdi” and they will bear the responsibility of security and protecting the regime against uprisings. Many in the Guards and Basij have been told that the 12th Imam is on earth, facilitated the victory of Hezbollah over Israel in the 2006 war and soon will announce publicly his presence after the needed environment is created.

Any Iranian military or commercial vessel easily could get right outside the U.S. coastline and in less than 60 seconds fire a ballistic missile armed with a nuclear payload and detonate it over U.S. skies in anelectromagnetic attack that would plunge America back into the 18th century.

Studies show within just one year after such an attack, two-thirds of Americans would cease to exist and the rest would live under dire conditions.

I’ve quoted the most important points in this article.  Please click the following link to read the article in its entirety.  This is a real reason why I am a prepper.

2-Liter Water – How to Store Water

It’s amazing how something as simple as storing water stressed me out!  Every source I read said to buy the 55 gallon containers specifically made for storing water.  I guess they keep UV rays out…uv rays ruin water.  Well, I wish I could buy many or even just one, but since we live on a very firm budget that is hard to meet on a weekly basis, I can’t do it.  As important as prepping is to me, as important as survival is to me, the fact is that I have to do it all using very little money.

One day I decided to read what FEMA has to say about emergency preparedness.  I guess I should have used them as the first source I had gone to, but I have a bit of a trust issue with them lol.  They don’t factor into my prepping much at all.  But…they really came through for me with water storage.

We get pizza from Little Caesars once every couple of weeks.  It’s a break from making dinner for me, and it’s a break for the kids from having to eat the healthy stuff I make that they detest lol.  When we go for pizza, we also buy two 2 liters of pop as a treat.  Imagine my surprise when I read that 2 liters are a great way to store water.  Granted, food grade water storage containers are the way to go, but if you can’t afford to invest in one or many, this is the best alternative I have found.

Plastic jugs that held milk or juice aren’t good to reuse or store water in. Milk proteins and fruit sugars can’t be completely removed, so bacteria grows easily in them.

The 2 liter needs to be marked with a 1 on the bottom…any other number isn’t good to use for storage.  After you make sure your 2 liter is the right kind, wash it out with dish soap and rinse well.  Then you need to sanitize the bottle by adding 1 teaspoon of non scented bleach to a quart of water.  Swish it around the bottle so it touches all areas.  Rinse well.

Fill the sanitized and rinsed 2 liter to the top with regular tap water.  FEMA says that if you us tap water treated by a water utility that uses chlorine you don’t need to add anything else to it.  If you use well water or some other water source, add two drops of non scented bleach to the water.  Use the original cap and tightly close.  FEMA suggests replacing the stored water every six months, so I label my liters with the date I filled them.  Store in a cool, dark place (guess that’s the whole uv ray thing again).

If anyone has come up with another affordable way to store water, please let me know!  Thanks!

Concerns Grow Over Volcanic Eruptions

There’s a new article out from USAToday about volcanoes.  Predicting eruptions still isn’t an exact science, but scientists are changing their ideas of how to track them.  A lot of people think that volcanic eruptions affect only those in the immediate area, but a large enough volcano erupting could cause an entire country the size of the US a “nuclear winter”…and cause differing effects further out.

If Yellowstone’s volcano erupted, we’re almost guaranteed a nuclear winter here in the US everywhere east of it.  Crops would not grow, the foul air would affect our health.  Many scientists believe Yellowstone is long overdue for an eruption.

Here’s the article:
